Answer

Checkmate happens when a king is under attack and has no legal move to escape. Once checkmate occurs, the game ends immediately. The key is not simply putting the king in check — the attacking player must also remove every legal way out.

So, What Exactly Is Checkmate?

Imagine your opponent's king is being attacked. That means the king is in check. The player must normally make a legal move to get the king out of danger.

But what happens if there is no legal move that can save the king?

That position is called checkmate. The game ends at that moment, and the player who delivered checkmate wins.

Check Is Not Always Checkmate

This is one of the most important distinctions for beginners. A king can be in check without the game being over.

If the player can legally move the king, capture the attacking piece, or block the attack when possible, the position is not checkmate.

Checkmate happens only when every legal escape has been removed.

Can the King Escape?

When a king is in check, beginners can use a simple three-part test. Ask whether the player can legally do any of the following:

01

Move the King

Can the king move to a safe square that is not controlled by an opponent's piece?

02

Capture the Attacker

Can the king or another piece legally capture the piece giving check?

03

Block the Attack

If the check comes along a line, can another piece block the attack?

If none of these legal solutions works, you may have a checkmate.

⚡ 60-Second Challenge

Before reading the answer, imagine your opponent's king is in check. Your job is to decide whether the position is actually checkmate.

♟ Ask yourself: “Where can the king go?”
The key idea

If the king has no safe square, the attacking piece cannot be captured, and the attack cannot be blocked when blocking is possible, then the position is checkmate.

Check + No Legal Escape = Checkmate

Beginner Mistake to Avoid

Don't assume that every check wins the game. After giving check, always ask: “Can the king escape?” Checking the opponent's legal responses is an important habit for improving calculation and avoiding tactical mistakes.
